The possum incident

Tuesday is trash day for those of us who live out in the county. This morning my good dependable husband was taking the trash out for us when he made an unusal discovery. Will and I were still inside when he came in and very nonchalantly said "We have a little visitor in our trash". Of course I said "Do you mean a dog?" "No" he said. "How about a rat or snake?" I asked. "Nope" he replied. He then told me that I really needed to go and see for myself. After a few last minute loose ends that had to be tied up, we finally exited the house. Just as my foot touched the bottom step I heard Will scream and say "Mom something or some kind of animal is in our garbage. I quickly ran over and took a look. Inside was a disgusting possum. He was just laying there with his tongue out like he was dead. I assumed he was dead until Jeff pointed out the maybe he was just "playing possum". I have heard this expression for my entire life but have never seen it so dramatically put into play. As I leaned over once again for a quick glance, Will decided to give the trash can a good karate kick. The can went on it's side and out rolled the possum. He still lay there until we all leaned in again. Just as we got over the top of him, he turned to look and see if we were still there and we all screamed. He then took off through the yard. He stopped to give us a menacing hiss. He kept waddling away only to realize that his foot was ensnared by a big, bad walmart sack. Every few steps he stopped and hissed at the sack. We laughed and laughed. What an embaressment for the poor possum when he gets with all of his friends. Can't you just hear them making fun of him. It would be the equivalent of a human dragging toilet paper on your shoe. What wildlife in Mississippi!!!!

P.S. Click on the picture and you can see this mean thing hissing at the bag!

I left a response to your comments on my blog but realized you may not go back to it soon to read it. Miss getting with ya'll as much as we use to. Guess it was Camp. Let's do better! Will's pics were real good. I enjoyed having him in Camp this summer. He is always 'in character' especially when it comes to having pictures made. Wonder who he gets this from???????

Rebecca, that nasty thing will be back, unless Jeff actually did away with it. Knowing him, he probably did not pass up the chance to bring home the bacon!! Yum, yum..... You do live in Mississippi. That neighbor of yours, across the road, could give you a good possum recipe I'm sure. By the way, Will is a mighty handsome young man. Love, Cathy
